Lights, Camera, NAISAK: Students Win Big in the Global Campus Bitesize Reels Competition!
NAISAK students have triumphed at the Global Campus Bitesize Cinema Reels 2024, securing runner-up in the 11–14 Narrative category (Friends) and winning the 14+ Animation category (What Is Perfection?). Out of 960 students worldwide, our six shortlisted entries showcased outstanding creativity, culminating in a campus awards ceremony and a special masterclass with Lord David Puttnam.

A wave of excitement is sweeping through the NAISAK community as several students were shortlisted in the prestigious Global Campus (GC) Bitesize Reels competition! Earlier this year, a group of talented students took part in this international event, showcasing their creativity, hard work, and passion for storytelling. And now, we are thrilled to announce that many of them have made it to the final stages — and the official results are finally in!

NAISAK celebrates not one, but two major wins in the Global Campus Bitesize Cinema: GC Reels Competition 2024.

In the Narrative category for the 11–14 age group, the Year 8 team of Devaharsh Deepesh, Aaron Richards Rajendra Kumar, Sharon Sabith, and Joab Peter earned the title of runners-up with their entry Friends — a heartfelt short film exploring the importance of friendship. Meanwhile, in the Animation category for students aged 14+, Year 10 duo Ashley Lim and Clarence Andrei were crowned winners for their visually stunning and thought-provoking film What is Perfection? Which invites viewers to reflect on the meaning of perfection in today’s world.

 

These students dedicated countless hours during Term 1, planning, scripting, designing, filming, animating, and even stepping into acting roles to bring their ideas to life. Their success is a reflection of their outstanding effort and collaboration throughout the project.

This year’s competition saw:       

 

  • 960 students participate from across the globe
  • 56 entries submitted from 22 schools worldwide
  • With 6 entries shortlisted from NAISAK alone, an incredible achievement in itself

 

The shortlisted entries span a variety of categories — documentaries, animations, and narratives — showcasing the wide range of talents and interests among NAISAK students. Each film is a unique reflection of their creativity and voice. Here's a closer look at the works that earned them this recognition.

  • Group 2 Documentary: What is perfect about NAISAK? by Sofi De Guzman, Hashita Ganapuram, and Shruti Jegan – A thoughtful and personal exploration of what makes NAISAK special, highlighting its inclusive culture and vibrant community.

     

  • Group 3 Documentary: Iceland and the Northern Lights by Kumaradithya Sowndramalingam, Divy Jitendrakumar Shah, and Aayan Ghorui – A captivating documentary that takes viewers on a visual journey through one of nature’s most breathtaking phenomena.

     

  • Group 3 Animation: The Perfect Chocolate Cake by Althea Nicci Baldonado, Lana Rogelio, and Kyra – A charming and imaginative animation about baking, filled with humor, creativity, and heart.

     

  • Group 4 Animation: What is Perfection? by Ashley Lim and Clarence Andrei – The winning entry in its category, this film challenges viewers to think about the pressure to be perfect and what perfection truly means.

     

  • Group 3 Narrative: Friends by Devaharsh Deepesh, Aaron Richards Rajendra Kumar, Sharon Sabith, and Joab Peter – A moving narrative that captures the essence of friendship through compelling storytelling and performance.

 

 

Global Campus Lead, Ms. Victoria Hughes, praised the students’ efforts and growth throughout the filmmaking process: “NAISAK worked hard in their Global Campus over a 3-month duration. They planned storyboards, wrote scripts, and developed their filmmaking, animating, editing, and acting skills even further during this project. The students’ efforts paid off, and they are all worthy winners in our eyes. This is an amazing achievement for NAISAK students and shows how Global Campus is being used in a variety of ways to enhance our students’ learning even more.”

 

This incredible success highlights more than just competition results — it represents a broader celebration of student creativity, resilience, and passion. Whether capturing the natural beauty of Iceland or questioning societal ideals of perfection, each project offered students a platform to express meaningful ideas and develop essential 21st-century skills.

NAISAK hosted a short awards ceremony to celebrate the winners with a special surprise appearance from their family. This was a wonderful opportunity to see the finalist films on the big screen and to personally congratulate the students on their incredible achievements. The students were shocked to know that part of their prize for winning is a masterclass session with renowned filmmaker Lord David Puttnam“This was a big achievement for our NAISAK students, especially our winners. They had no idea about the news, and we were so happy to surprise them! Seeing all their hard work be transformed into these amazing and creative films has all paid off,” said Ms. Hughes. The ceremony was also attended by NAISAK principal Mr. Jamie Hughes and Head of Secondary Mr. Kevin Ferry.  

 

A heartfelt thank you also goes to all the GC teachers who led the project in classrooms or volunteered as judges — your time, energy, and encouragement were vital to this success.
